Ottobre Design 1/2009 "Hertta"

The trouble with owning Crafty Mamas?
I am spoilt for choice. I have access to so many amazing fabrics and patterns...that sometimes it is overwhelming. So to help me focus I am concentrating on one Otto issue each week. This week it is 1/2009.

Available as a back issue from the Crafty Mama shop.

This is the adorable HERTTA skirt. This fabric is one I had printed at Spoonflower ages ago. I had seen the Peter Alexander jammies in crochet print flannel and had plans to do the same. But somehow I like it better as a skirt- trimmed with some light weight denim from my stash and some adorable mushie ribbon by Janeas World ( also at Crafty Mamas!).

MODKID Penny in Bed of Roses STENZO!

I loved this fabric the moment I  first saw the swatch...ever have fabrics like that?  STENZO Bed of Roses, cotton/elastomeric knit. And in real life, you almost expect it to exude a rose fragrance! I had to make Lil a Penny, her current fave pattern from the new Modkid range.

This Penny in size 8-10 ( I tweak) took 1 metre of  glorious Stenzo knit.

Sweet as!

Oh, make sure you enter the STENZO Give-away too!

KIDS TSHIRT/TANK CLEVERNESS

For the Aussie Crafty Mamas, Kmart has a veritable plethora of kids ( and mamas) tshirts and tanks in differing styles for $4-$7. They are 100% cotton, too! I grabbed a few this morning. I like to have  some of these on standby as they make great gifts when dyed up all pretty like, or embellished. The Crafty Mamas shop has some really cool -patterns for projects like these too!

Monkey's Bugs designs have these cool epatterns...

BREEZY is a really cute panel dress with a tshirt or tank top.

TWIRLY is an adorable tiered tshirt dress.

Also the Crafty Mamas forum has Reconstruction area, for even more inspiration.

And how amazing is THIS?
From "Stop staring and start sewing".

For some embellishment tutes and clever ideas, visit Lil Blue Boo.
This talented designer offers some really cool free graphics for you to print on tees too.

So stock up on those plain tees!

Happy Sewing!

1 metre Michael Miller Empire waist knit dress

This is made from the Altered Cloth tute I blogged about this week, using 1m of the yummy new Michael Miller interlocks from the Crafty Mamas Shop.

It is very quick and easy to sew up, these new knits sew like a dream. The tute is actually for a top, but I used the entire metre and made a knee length dress, Perfect for over bathers!

Some Spring Sewing Projects for Mama!

Even though I have cupboards ( and a shop!) full of sewing patterns..I am always on the look out for quick and easy tutes. There is just something about sewing with no pattern that appeals to me. On my list to try this week...

Empire waist top tutorial.... from Altered Cloth

And simple shirred tops from Altered Cloth.
This can easily have straps attached too, if you are worried about the kids exposing you ( ask me ...I know all about that!). Simply make up two straps, try the top on with a bra on, and then position the straps where you bra straps go. Easy. Then sew on.

Great tops for jersey knits like Stella and the very funky new Michael Miller knits in store.

Something else that caught my eye this week, t shirts with sweet little tulle flowers. I saw one in a shop window in lime..just stunning.I found this tute to make my own!

And I've seen a few versions of the good old legging in the stores...all dressed up with ruched sides, buttons, leather thonging, lots of cool stuff. Again, use a cotton/elastomeric knit on these like STELLA or our Euro knits.

Here's a nice tute on making your own from MADE

Happy Sewing Adventures!

MODKID " Penny" Pattern Review by Crafty Mama

The very groovy new patterns from MODKID arrived this week...and are  quickly selling out, so don't dilly dally! I did manage to grab a PENNY for myself, and I LOVE it! MODKID patterns are the work of the very talented Patty Young. You can see the range HERE at Crafty Mamas.

Patty is well known for her amazing fabrics collections, including the recent interlock knits ( yep, we have them! Check them out HERE like...

Here's my review of PENNY, I made this for Bon, age 10.

MODKID patterns are printed on lovely thick paper with the sizing clearly indicated. The instructions are encompassed in a cool little booklet, they are very clear and easy to follow. Patty has included help on selecting the best size for hard to fit kids, too. As Penny is for knits, there is a lot of great info given for first time knit sewers. You are guided through construction step by step then shown some cool variations to try at the end as well as some beautiful examples in the inspiration gallery.

PENNY consists of 3 main pieces- love that! It can be made in different lengths, with empire waist, as a skirt/dress/tunik. With short sleeves, long sleeves or contrasting sleeves. Really, the combos here are endless.

PENNY goes together like a dream, quickly and easily, making it an ideal beginners pattern. It is suited to stretch knits only, ( heaps in the Crafty Mamas shop to choose from). I have used a Flap Happy knit from my stash that Bon fell in love with last year.

I used pastel pink STELLA on the neckline, and rolled hem on the sleeves and hem. The sewing up took about 30 minutes, love that!  I found PENNY to be quite generous in sizing, but then Bon is tall and slim.

I am about to go raid the Crafty Mamas shop for fabrics to make up a few more!

The verdict? MODKID Penny is the new Go-To dress pattern!

Adding another..just to prove I have not been resting on my laurels..( what are laurels, anyway?).

Empire waist version with short sleeves. Michael Miller knits and aqua from my stash.

OTTOBRE Design #303 to Gilet How- To

This is one of my fave t shirt patterns, and a great basic top for playing around with. Here's  a gilet version....with the hanky type hem. I extended it by 20cm at the bottom, and took it out 5cm at the sides. Then did this... see my very technical sketch??

The bottom is then finished with a thin rolled hem.

SPOTLIGHT ON...Kleine Hexenkuche

Kleine Hexenkuche ( Small Kitchen Witch) patterns are exclusive in Australia to us, Crafty Mamas! These gorgeous designs are in German with full step by step tutes available on line. They are the work of a fellow Crafty Mama from Germany, Andrea.

If you love  Euro style patterns...you will adore these! See the range HERE.
